Compared to a visa or US passport, what are the benefits of a Green Card? We’ll start with some basics. For the majority of non-U.S. citizens traveling to the U.S., pre-approval is required. If you intend to remain in the US permanently, obtaining a Green Card may be your best option. With a Green Card, a person can stay and work in the US permanently, as opposed to a visa that expires. As long as you hold a Green Card, you retain the citizenship of your country of origin. A Green Card does give you some rights in the US, but it does not give you full citizenship rights. Thus, even though you have a green card, you cannot cast your vote in US elections or lose your green card if you commit certain crimes or leave the country.
The Green Card application process
You will need to follow different procedures for applying for a Green Card depending on whether you want to apply in the United States or abroad – and accordingly, the type of Green Card you want. Below are the general steps.
1. Decide what category of Green Card you may qualify for and verify your eligibility
First, you should review the eligibility requirements for each category before applying for a Green Card. The core requirements of each category will be covered later. You can also get more information from USCIS.
2: Apply for adjustment of status from inside the US – or apply for it through the consular process outside the US
You may apply for a Green Card if you already have a visa for another country, or if you are still in your country of origin. You will generally need to file an immigrant petition and wait for visa approval if you wish to become an immigrant in the United States. However, the process may differ depending on your circumstances.
3: Check if visas are available
US citizens’ family members can apply for green cards in the United States, but the number of Green Cards available for employment and sponsorship is capped each year. It is therefore likely that you will have to wait until there are visas available in your category before you can start the application process.
4: Fill out all necessary paperwork and collect supporting documents
In preparation for your claim, you should complete the correct application form and gather any proof that you need to support your claim. Depending on the nature of your application, your employer or a family member may be able to assist you. A discussion of the most commonly needed documents will follow shortly.
5: Visit one of the national visa centers or centers that offer assistance
To process your application, we will need to collect biometric information such as your fingerprint, photo, and signature. A fee may also be required depending on the type of application.
6: Schedule an interview if necessary
If you are applying for a Green Card, you will be required to attend an interview. Your paperwork must be brought to the meeting along with your original documentation. If you are applying with a family member or employer’s support, they may ask you to accompany them.
7: We will let you know if you’ve been accepted
From inside the United States, you’ll receive a letter informing you of the decision regarding your Green Card application. When their applications are denied, applicants will also find out what the reason for the denial is, and what options they have for appealing or reopening the application.
When your application is complete, you will receive your visa packet from the consular officer. It is not recommended that you open the packet. It should be given to a customs official upon your arrival at the border. You will receive your Green card from a customs officer upon entering the United States.

Using the 535 USD cost of filing an immigration petition for an alien spouse or relative, you can get an idea of how much it costs. In addition to Form I-485, which can cost as much as 1,140 USD, a biometrics fee of 85 USD is required.
